Hamster Homes
Small fur balls to some, hamsters can make great and easy to care for animals. These palm sized creatures are members of the rodent family. They are nocturnal and have an average lifespan of two years. Their behavior is typically docile unless they are surprised or awakened and they are very curious by nature.
Picking the Right Cage
Your hamster should be kept in a cage that gives them plenty of room to roam around freely. Avoid using a round or oval cage because the shape could cause your small, furry friend to lose its orientation. Make sure the space between the bars is small enough for your hamster to not be able to leave the cage.
Cages with pipes are a great idea. They mimic the hamster’s original natural environment which is tunnels. It is also ideal to include a house and a wheel inside their cage.
Feeding Your Hamster
Hamsters are omnivorous meaning they eat both meat and vegetables. Their natural food includes:
- Grains
- Seeds
- Vegetables
- Insects
The premixed hamster food found in most pet stores is completely safe and sufficient with the necessary nutrients to feed your hamster. Feed your hamster at the same time each day or leave a constant food supply. Variety is the key in a healthy hamster’s diet.
