Declawing
Declawing cats is a very controversial subject. Most veterinarians are willing to perform this procedure for you, but some are morally opposed to it. The subject of declawing, however, goes beyond just veterinarians. There are many cat owners who believe that it is abusive to remove the claws from a cat’s paws. Others see only the benefits of declawing cats.
If a cat is violent, it may be better to have the claws removed. This can keep the cat from doing as much damage as it would with its claws. A violent cat may also cause visitors in your home to be injured if the cat attacks a guest. Declawing can also keep a poorly trained cat from using your furniture as a scratching post. For some people, this is reason enough to get their cats declawed. Other people wholeheartedly disagree.
Declawing your cat involves a surgical procedure in which the veterinarian burns the claws off, and seals the wound. Unlike simply cutting the claws, they are completely removed. This is somewhat similar to completely removing your fingernails. For this reason, many people are morally opposed to declawing cats.
Ultimately, it is your decision as to whether or not you should get your cat declawed. There are some benefits to the procedure, but there are also drawbacks. You should weigh your options and consult with your veterinarian to get more information. Make the choice that is right for you and your cat.
